CBS Operations Manager – Control Environment

£50,000 to £59,000 plus great benefits (Work Level 5)

Manchester City Centre, in this role you’ll work in a hybrid way splitting your time between home and coming into the office at least twice a week (find out more about our hybrid working policy at jobs.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).

In line with the Internal Mobility Policy, we’d like to make you aware that there is a preferred candidate who has been identified for this opportunity.

We’re looking for an Operations Manager for our Control Environment to join us within our wider Co-op Business Services (CBS) organisation. CBS is made up of a number of diverse teams dedicated to delivering high-quality, reliable and cost-effective business services across our Co-op. You’ll play a key role in helping CBS to support and realise our group vision of ‘co-operating to build more value for member-owners every day’.

In this role, you’ll help shape how we work by building and implementing a solid control environment across CBS and our end-to-end service outcomes. You’ll be part of the CBS leadership team, working closely with senior leaders to make sure we’re focused on the right things and delivering what the business needs. You’ll lead and support colleagues to embed a culture of control that’s clear, consistent, and flexible enough to work across all the different services we offer.

Why this job matters

We’re realising the value of having a strong control environment in CBS. It’s not just about compliance, it’s about creating clarity, consistency, and confidence in how we work. This role will help us harness that value and roll it out across the organisation, driving cultural change and empowering teams to own their part of Co-op.

What you’ll do

  • Develop and embed a control environment across CBS, grounded in industry best-practice and tailored to our services
  • Lead and coach a small team and a network of risk champions to inspire change and build capability
  • Work closely with senior leaders to support, challenge, and align delivery with business priorities
  • Monitor the performance of the control environment, call out issues, and ensure accountability across CBS teams
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve and grow the control environment
  • Bring subject matter expertise and a continuous improvement approach to help shape future services

This role would suit people who have

  • A strong understanding of control frameworks, relevant standards, and legislation
  • Experience leading and motivating teams to deliver change
  • The ability to drive cultural transformation across an organisation
  • A strategic approach, setting goals, direction, and long-term plans
  • Experience using innovative technology to solve business problems
  • The confidence to work within a matrix environment with a variety of partners

Why Co-op?

At Co-op, we’re owned by our members. And because we’re owned by you, we can do right by you. So when you join us, you’re not just taking a job, you’re joining a movement. We’re an organisation that puts people and communities first, and we’re powered by purpose. We want this to be a place where you can thrive, so you’ll also receive:

  • An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
  • A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
  • Private healthcare
  • Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
  • Coaching and training to support your career development
  • Wagestream app – giving you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn
