Our first Fraud and Investigations apprentice at Co-op

Jayne shares how new legislations have led her to become the first Co-op colleague to complete the Counter Fraud Investigator apprenticeship.

I’m really pleased that at 60 years old, I’ve been given the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship.

Jayne Crowe | Investigations and Security Manager

Over the last 28 years, I’ve worked across various roles and departments, from field-based positions to my current role in the Support Centre. When I was at school, I dreamed of becoming a police officer, but at the time, height restrictions meant I didn’t meet the requirements. Instead, I found my way into retail, which became the foundation of my career - ultimately leading me to my current role as Investigations and Security Manager in the Risk, Governance, Compliance, and Internal Audit team.

Helping put things right

Many people assume wrongdoing doesn’t happen in our business, but like any organisation, sometimes it does. My job is to support putting things right when it does - something that has kept me in work for many years! While I never gained a formal police background, my roles have always involved conducting impartial investigations, some of which have led to criminal prosecutions.

Along the way, I was also fortunate to be mentored by former police officers within Co-op, whose guidance was invaluable. Over the years, I’ve completed various training and qualifications, but until recently I hadn’t considered an apprenticeship.

A first for Fraud and Investigations

With new legislation on business fraud coming into effect this year, we knew we needed to stay ahead and ensure compliance. To support our team’s upskilling, I was offered the chance to start the Counter Fraud Investigator Level 4 apprenticeship - and I’m proud to say I am the first colleague at Co-op to take on an apprenticeship in Fraud and Investigations.

Seven months in, I’m really enjoying the experience. It’s allowing me to build on what I’ve learned in my role while deepening my understanding of the technical and legislative aspects of fraud prevention. I’m really pleased that at 60 years old, I’ve been given the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship. It’s a great reminder that there are always new ways to develop your skills and grow your career.
