Indirect Tax Manager
Greater ManchesterIndirect Tax Manager
Up to £80,000 plus excellent benefits (Work Level 4)
Manchester city centre - in this role you’ll work in a hybrid way splitting your time between home and the office (find out more about our hybrid working policy at https://jobs.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).
In line with the Internal Mobility Policy, we’d like to make you aware that there is a preferred candidate who has been identified for this opportunity.
We’re looking for an Indirect Tax Manager to join our Financial Control team and deliver all the VAT and PPT compliance and advice across the wide variety of our Co-op businesses whilst leading a team of two indirect tax analysts. It’s a fantastic opportunity to gain insight and experience in a varied and dynamic business.
Why this role matters
As Indirect Tax Manager, it’ll be your job to work with our business, HMRC and advisers to make sure all VAT and PPT issues are managed well. You’ll be expected to provide tax advice on projects affecting the Co-op, including the chance to input into finance transformation projects and providing guidance on emerging tax changes.
What you’ll do
• Make sure all VAT and PPT returns and payments are made on time
• Identify and manage VAT risks and opportunities
• Work with our finance transformation team and look for opportunities to improve our VAT processes, particularly through effective use of technology
• Keep up to date with developments in the external market and legislation that affect our business from a VAT perspective, providing advice to internal partners and implementing any changes needed as a result
• Be the VAT technical lead for the Co-op, leading the relationship with HMRC, advisers and internal partners
• Lead, coach and develop the indirect tax team
What you’ll bring
We’re committed to making our roles as accessible as possible, so we only ask for the minimum criteria. To thrive here, you’ll need to bring:
• VAT experience, ideally gained in the retail sector, and including detailed knowledge of complex technical areas such as Partial Exemption and Land & Property issues (PPT experience would be an advantage)
• Commercial awareness, and an understanding of how tax decisions impact the wider business
• Experience identifying and implementing process improvements and risk management
• Excellent relationship building and communication skills, able to engage with and influence a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
Why Co-op?

We’re an organisation that puts people and communities first, and we’re powered by purpose. We want this to be a place where you can thrive, so you’ll also receive:
• An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
• 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
• A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
• Private healthcare for you and your family
• Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
• 30% discount on Co-op products and 10% off other brands
• Stream – early access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
• Virtual healthcare including GP appointments, mental health support, nutrition and fitness advice
• 24/7 colleague support service
• Training and support for your development and career progression
• Cycle-to-work scheme
