Building a career that genuinely makes a difference

Funeral Director, Chris, shares how an apprenticeship, personal experience and real pride in his work helped him build a career in Funeralcare.

There’s no other job in the world that can give you the satisfaction we get in Funeralcare.

Chris Lennox | Funeral Director

I joined Co-op in May 2023 on a part-time contract – and it was a big leap for me. I’d always wanted to work in Funeralcare, but stepping away from full-time work wasn’t easy, especially for my family. Still, I knew it was something I wanted, so I went for it.

Part of that came from my own experience. When my mum passed away, it was Co-op who supported our family. Seeing the care they gave, and knowing she was at peace, stayed with me and showed me the difference this role can make.

Completing my apprenticeship

Not long after joining, I applied for a Funeral Director role and didn’t get it. But my managers could see I was keen to learn and progress, and encouraged me to take on the Funeral Director apprenticeship. I said yes straight away – if something can help me grow, I’ll grab it with both hands.

It wasn’t always easy and at one point, I nearly gave up. But the support around me didn’t let that happen – my tutor and manager helped me keep going.

Since then, I’ve stepped into different roles and locations, building experience across care centres and learning how different teams work. Completing my apprenticeship and becoming a qualified Funeral Director was a proud moment - especially knowing the effort it took.

Making a difference

What matters most to me is the impact we have on families. There’s no other job like it. Helping a family feel their loved one is at peace is something only we can do, and it gives you real pride in your work.

At the same time, we know how important every funeral is. It’s not just for the family in front of us – it’s also our moment to show the care and standards we deliver. Funerals are our ‘shop window’. When we get that balance right – real care and consistently high standards – we build trust, connect with our communities, and then when people need us, they remember that.

Looking ahead

For me, the journey doesn’t stop here. I want to keep learning, take on more apprenticeships, and go as far as I can within Co-op. Ultimately, I want to lead teams and help others develop too.

If you’re thinking about developing yourself, I’d say go for it. The opportunities and support are there - you just need to take that first step.
