I didn't realise I was a carer - until I wasn't doing it alone

How Co-op supported me to find connection, clarity and understanding as a carer.

Sometimes it’s just nice to listen, feel connected, and know you’re not the only one juggling things.

I’ve been joining the virtual PaCT Carers’ Coffee Mornings for a while now, and honestly, they’ve become something I really look forward to. They’re open to everyone, whether you’re caring for a child, partner, parent, relative or friend, and there’s absolutely no pressure. You don’t have to come every time, and you don’t even have to speak. Sometimes it’s just nice to listen, feel connected, and know you’re not the only one juggling things.

For a long time, I didn’t even think of myself as a “carer.” I don’t have children, so I assumed PaCT (our Parents and Carers Together colleague network) wasn’t really for me. It was only after chatting with colleagues in the network that I realised - what I was doing every day is caring. I think a lot of us just see it as ‘doing what needs to be done’.

My own caring journey began after an elderly family member had a serious accident and ended up in hospital. When they came home, things had changed - they couldn’t manage in the same way as before. Suddenly, I was trying to figure out how to support them, without really knowing where to start.

That’s when I came across Care Concierge, which is available to all Co-op colleagues. They were brilliant at helping me understand what practical steps to take, especially around mobility support, and giving me a bit of clarity when everything felt quite overwhelming.

Between that and the Carers’ Coffee Mornings, I’ve found a real sense of support and belonging. Balancing work and caring isn’t always easy, but Co-op, especially PaCT, has helped lighten the load. It’s also given me the chance to share what I’ve learned and support others in similar situations.

I’m also grateful for the understanding from my line manager and the flexibility Co-op offers. Being able to step away for appointments has made such a difference, both for me and for my relative.

If any of this sounds familiar, I’d really encourage you to reach out or join a session. Whether you’re looking for advice or just a bit of reassurance, there’s a supportive community here - you don’t have to do it alone.
