Role Summary: To provide specialist technical leadership within Co-op’s Technical Services Bureau (TSB), embedding subject matter expertise in refrigeration, HVAC, and connected assets into the team and wider asset strategy.  The role applies technical knowledge, in partnership with the Connected Asset Manager, FM and Energy stakeholders, to inform predictive maintenance, analytics and AI development, energy optimisation, remote performance management and commissioning quality assurance, so that asset reliability, performance and energy efficiency are improved across the Co-op’s network, delivering cost and growth benefits.
Key Responsibilities: 
  • Act as the primary technical subject matter expert for refrigeration, HVAC, and connected assets within the TSB, providing engineering guidance and reducing reliance on external specialists.
  • Work with the Connected Assets Manager to embed technical engineering expertise into predictive maintenance strategy development, ensuring a robust data-driven approach.
  • Support the interpretation of predictive maintenance analytical outputs from an engineering perspective, informing supply chain and operational teams on appropriate maintenance responses and asset intervention priorities.
  • Monitor and analyse the performance of refrigeration and HVAC equipment, using data and insight to identify and deliver optimisation opportunities to deliver energy savings and improve operational reliability.
  • Utilise data from connected assets to refine and optimise asset operations and in use parameters to delivery energy savings. 
  • Develop and implement energy optimisation parameters and smart control strategies through TDB software and connected asset systems, working with Facilities Optimisation Operatives to ensure effective deployment and sustained performance.
  • Support the development of commissioning quality assurance, using technical knowledge to evolve the ‘proving process’ alongside the Connected Asset Manager, ensuring it aligns with evolving asset specification, commissioning guidance and Asset Renewal projects. 
  • Keep technical knowledge up to date inline with new specifications, manufacturers guidance and through close working relationships with Engineering and Standards.
  • Engage with supply chain partners and technology providers to stay ahead of emerging capabilities in smart controls, predictive diagnostics, and connected asset management.
  • Contribute technical insight to development of the connected asset optimisation strategy, supporting wider Energy & Technical Services objectives, investment decisions and roadmap development.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience: 
  • Refrigeration and HVAC Engineering Expertise - strong technical knowledge of commercial refrigeration, HVAC systems, and associated controls, ideally within a large multi-site retail or FM environment.
  • Connected Asset and BMS Knowledge - Understanding of building management systems, remote monitoring platforms, and connected asset control (e.g. RDM or equivalent), with experience using data outputs to drive performance improvements.
  • Predictive Analytics Contribution - Ability to interpret large-scale performance datasets and analytical outputs, applying engineering insights to validate findings, inform maintenance priorities, and support the development of predictive maintenance models.
  • Smart Controls Development - Experience developing or configuring smart control strategies within TDB or similar software, with confidence translating specifications into operational settings.
  • Commissioning Assurance - Proven ability to assess and validate commissioning quality against specification, identifying non-conformance and managing resolution through supply chain.
  • Collaboration & Influence - Comfortable working across multiple teams, with the interpersonal skills to build trust and influence without direct authority and confidence to align diverse teams to ensure integrated planning and delivery.
  • Communication and Insight Reporting - Able to present technical findings clearly for both specialist and non-specialist audiences, translating data into actionable insights.
  • IT and Analytics Proficiency - Competent in Microsoft Office suite and data analytics tools; experience with energy or asset management platforms is advantageous.
